Author Peter Irons, a well-respected legal writer and professor of political science at UC-San Diego, has written an invaluable study of the American "imperial presidency," called War Powers. While the book is far too in-depth to summarize here, I have created a separate page, The Imperial Presidency, which briefly delineates the tendency towards a "unitary executive" now so enamored of by the Bush administration, but which began almost from the inception of the Republic. Further material from Irons's book can be found elsewhere on this page and throughout the site. Irons is also a member of the American Empire Project, which is worth perusing as well.
